Christmas ornaments, inspired by Kimekomi dolls
Kimekomi dolls were born in the Edo period (1603-1868) on the initiative of a carpenter who had an idea of recovering scrap wood to make dolls. This traditional technique is still used today in the manufacture of Japanese dolls dressed in a kimono.
In this workshop, participants will make a Christmas ornament out of silk Obi fabric from old obis (kimono belt). They will explore the Kimekomi technique which consists of cutting notches in an object to insert pieces of fabric, glue cords...
Junko Fukuda, designer of the Wa-Miyabi brand, creates bags, scarves, skirts using silk kimono fabric and vintage indigo cotton. She is passionate about crafts and traditional savoir-faire, such as the Kimekomi technique, which she uses to make decorative objects.
